You've got a choice of routes around the med.
The easiest is to drive through Turkey and the middle east crossing Sinai into Egypt. Things get more interesting if you take the north African routes: take the ferry from Italy into Tunisia and then drive through Libya to Egypt. Tunisia can give you Roman ruins and Star Wars sets. Libya has got more Roman ruins and the greatest oasis in Africa. Onto Egypt and you're on the home straight to the Pyramids. Alternatively, sort out visas for Algeria and you can add Spain to your route (at the moment, the Morocco - Algeria border is closed).
